Cutting out a career in hairdressing

Image of Gemma Carrick and Stephanie BallApprentices Gemma Carrick and Stephanie Ball are proving they can cut it in the world of hairdressing. Both girls work at Giggi’s Hair & Beauty Salon, in Durham City, under the tutelage of hairdresser Giggi Campoli.

Gemma, 19, who lives in Brandon, recently completed her apprenticeship in hairdressing and is working towards the more advanced apprenticeship.

Stephanie, 17, from Ferryhill, started her apprenticeship with Giggi back in April, but is already being allowed to blow-dry hair in salon.

Both girls are undertaking their apprenticeships with Durham Busi-ness Club. Apprenticeships are funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) County Durham, which has been given the target of helping the government achieve its goal of having a quarter of all young people aged 16 to 21 entering apprenticeships before the end of the year.

Austin McNamara, executive director of the LSC County Durham, said: “Like Gemma and Stephanie, more and more young people are now opting for apprenticeships when they leave school, and we are delighted that well-established local employers such as Giggi’s are seeing the real benefit in this form of learning.”
