The Facts About Apprenticeships
What are Apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships are work based learning programmes, aimed at young people from the age of 16. They are skills based and combine real work based learning with an employer and day release to learn theory and knowledge. You will achieve a national vocational qualification whilst "earning a wage" all at the same time!"
How old do I need to be?
You need to have left school and be under 25 years of age to be eligible. You can commence an apprenticeship if you are already in employment as long as your job is relevant to your chosen apprenticeship.
What qualifications do I need to apply?
There are no set entry qualifications - you just need to be living in England and be under 25, not in full time education nor have achieved a degree. Some employers in particular sectors do require minimum levels of qualifications (see specific apprenticeships for details).
If you need advice why not give us a call or speak to your local Connexions Service. To find your local office log onto www.connexions.gov.uk or contact Durham Connexions Service www.help4teens.co.uk or ring 0191 3849766.
Are there different Apprenticeships?
We offer apprenticeships in a range of occupations. These are:
◊ Business Administration
◊ Hairdressing
◊ Beauty Therapy
◊ Accounting
◊ Customer Service
To find out about other apprenticeships contact Connexions as detailed above or check out these web sites www.teenmachine.org or www.apprenticeships.org.uk
How long will my Apprenticeship take?
Apprenticeships are flexible to suit your potential and pace of learning and there is no fixed time. This will be discussed with you at your interview. If you want to find out more contact us on 0191 3884488.
How much will I get paid?
You can expect to receive no less than £80 per week from your employer (sometimes you can earn more than this!). However if you are eligible for EMA (Educational Maintenance Allowance), you may choose to receive this instead of a wage. Information on EMA can be found at www.dfes.gov.uk/financialhelp/ema/
Where will I be trained?
We try to match you with a local employer so you do not need to travel too far. However, this does depend on available employers and you will be expected to travel within a reasonable distance. Your day release will be held at our training centre in Chester-le-Street.
What support will I receive?
When you come for interview you will meet your assessor. This person will ensure you settle in, will monitor you and give you regular encouragement. Your assessor is key to making your apprenticeship run smoothly. You will also have access to a mentor during your training to provide any support and guidance you may require.
