The Facts About Apprenticeships

What are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are a combination of real work and day release to study a qualification in the occupation you have chosen as a career. By doing an apprenticeship you will achieve a national vocational qualification whilst “earning a wage” all at the same time!” To apply and start an apprenticeship you need to have left school but you can apply to us before you leave school.

What qualifications do I need?

There are no set entry qualifications – you need to be living in England and not have a degree or equivalent qualification.

Employers in particular sectors do require minimum levels of qualifications see specific apprenticeships for details.

How much will I get paid?

You can expect to receive no less than £80 per week this is due to increase to £95 from 1st August 2009. This is your wage paid directly from your employer (sometimes you can be paid more than this, however most employers offer the above minimum wage to start with).

If you are eligible for EMA (Educational Maintenance Allowance), you may decide to claim this instead of a wage. Information on EMA can be found at www.dfes.gov.uk/financialhelp/ema/ You cannot claim EMA if you are being paid a wage as described above.

Where will I be trained?

Most of your training will take place on the job by working for a local employer. We will try to locate an employer local to you so you do not need to travel too far. However, this does depend on available employers and you will be expected to travel within a reasonable distance. You will also have regular day release at our training centre in Chester le Street. to undertaking training and assessment towards your qualifications.

What support will I receive?

When you come in for your interview you will meet your tutor. This person will help you to settle in to your apprenticeship and monitor your progress. Your tutor will give you encouragement throughout your apprenticeship and help you to set targets towards completing your apprenticeship. Your tutor is key to making your apprenticeship run smoothly. Also you will have a mentor to provide any additional support, advice and guidance you may require during your apprenticeship.
